Ball Slide Repair

Slide Disassembly
Disassembly

1. Provide a confined work area, such as a tray or box cover, to prevent the loss of ball bearings or other components.

Lay the slide flat inside the box/tray with the base plate up and the wedge adjusting screws to the far side.

Back off pre-load adjusting screw marked "T" at left end of slide, then screw in the adjusting screw at right end (either marked "L" or unmarked).

Remove end stop at right end of tag side. Slowly push base plate outward to the right (some assemblies require noticeable force to completely remove the base plate). The ball bearings, keeper, and finally the rods, will fall out.
Reassembly
Reassembly

1. Clean all components and ensure all are accounted for. Quantity of ball bearings will vary depending on model.

Be sure tapered wedge is in the same released position as when disassembled

Reassembly 2. Place carriage on edge with tag side up and support with a block.
Reassembly 3. Place two (2) of the short rods in lower groove of carriage. Place ball keeper over the rods. Put half of the balls in the ball keeper. Press downwards on end balls to be sure that rods are separated to extreme edge of groove.
Reassembly 4. Hold base plate with forefingers on tapered wedge side and place two of the longer rods in opposite groove. Use the thumbs of each hand to hold the rods separated in groove.
Reassembly 5. Carefully position the base plate into the carriage so that the rods straddle the balls previously placed in the ball keeper. Use thumb and forefinger to keep base plate from falling out.
Reassembly 6. Slide base plate right until it extends out of carriage approximately 1".
Reassembly 7. Insert remaining long rods in base plate and separate to bear against the side of groove.
Reassembly 8. Start feeding ball keeper into position and insert remaining balls in keeper. Push keeper and balls flush with end of sliding member and push base plate in nearly flush with carriage.
Reassembly 9. Carefully insert 2 remaining short rods. Use care in doing so; you will feel the rods fall into true position.

Immediately attach end stop to prevent accidental disassembly. Move base plate back and forth with slight pressure until the limits of travel are approximately equal at each end of carriage.

To pre-load, retract the unmarked wedge adjusting screw (sometimes marked "L") at right end and slowly screw in the adjusting screw ?T? at left. Move the base plate back and forth continuously during the pre-load adjustment. Continue adjusting until the desired "feel" of action is obtained.

As final step, be sure both adjusting screws are snug against the ends of the tapered wedge.
